PREHISTORIA’s Cryptic Halo Delivers a Bold Fusion of Classic and Modern Heavy Metal – Album Review

StormSpell Records || 11 February 2025

Prehistoria - Cryptic HaloWhen you immerse yourself in the vast and diverse world of metal music, you begin to pick up on the nuanced stylistic cues and tropes that define each subgenre. Traditional heavy metal exemplifies this phenomenon. Often characterized by its homage to legends like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Dio, trad metal is less about reinventing the wheel and more about celebrating the essence of pure metal. Enter Prehistoria, a Midwest-based quintet whose debut full-length album, Cryptic Halo, masterfully captures the spirit of trad metal while blending elements of power, thrash, and black metal to craft something both classic and refreshingly dynamic.

Prehistoria opens Cryptic Halo with the cinematic instrumental “Futile Invocation of Cosmic Acknowledgement,” setting an ominous tone before diving into the meat of the album. Tracks like “Rise” and “Salvation Denied” deliver galloping riffs, dual guitar harmonies, and Alonso “Zo” Donoso’s soaring vocals, evoking the grandeur of Dio and the grit of Paul Di’Anno. The band expertly balances bombast and aggression, marrying traditional heavy metal’s heroic melodies with the intensity of thrash and black metal.

What sets Prehistoria apart is their ability to make these stylistic contrasts work seamlessly. Drummer Cody Johns deserves special mention for his dynamic performance, effortlessly shifting from rock-solid rhythms to ferocious blast beats. His fills are plentiful but never repetitive, showcasing a keen sense of musicality. Guitarists Shaun Cothron and Max Otworth maintain perfect chemistry, delivering a twin-riff attack and melodic solos that are nothing short of electrifying.

The album’s centerpiece, “Everlasting Legacy,” exemplifies Prehistoria’s ability to craft epic compositions, pairing emotionally charged vocals with intricate guitar work. Tracks like “Crucible of Shadows” delve into darker, brooding atmospheres, showcasing the band’s versatility. Meanwhile, “Dreamchaser” closes the album on a triumphant note, blending anthemic choruses with unrelenting energy that lingers long after the final chord.

Cryptic Halo benefits from polished production by Dan Wagoner and mixing/mastering by Simone Mularoni at Domination Studio. The clean sound highlights the album’s intricate arrangements, particularly the guitars and drums, which shine in the mix. However, Ian Bender’s bass often feels underrepresented. While its distorted crunch adds depth when audible, it fades too often into the background, leaving the mix slightly unbalanced.

Additionally, while the polished production enhances clarity, it occasionally lacks the raw, organic energy that defines the best traditional heavy metal releases. That said, the band avoids over-reliance on effects, keeping the focus on their natural sound. Donoso’s vocals are recorded clean and dry, adding authenticity to his commanding performance.

Cryptic Halo is a remarkable debut that cements Prehistoria as a rising force in the modern heavy metal scene. By honoring the traditions of the genre while incorporating contemporary influences, the band has crafted an album that feels timeless yet fresh. Though minor production issues detract slightly from the overall experience, the strength of the performances and songwriting more than compensates.

Fans of Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, and Dio will find plenty to love, but Cryptic Halo is also accessible to newcomers seeking an exhilarating entry into heavy metal. Prehistoria’s passion and skill are evident throughout, and this debut sets a high bar for what’s to come.
